To refer to this journey as the “craft” would suggest that the process requires eager research and engagement. Akin to being determined and intrigued by the questions unanswered, many who follow Witchcraft or Wicca must be willing to learn from both the past and the present. Not only will studying from various sources develop foundations, but gaining awareness of other spiritual paths can promote the unveiling of personal direction.
Thus, books are a wonderful tool to help guide us through this journey. Reading offers us a means to be the teachers and masters of our own craft. Humans are emotional creatures. Most of us are inherently motivated by self-actualization, which is a desire to fulfill your own potential. Please keep in mind that the mysticism within contemporary and archaic publications depends on how you perceive that information. For instance, not all books on the craft will portray witches or pagans the way you do. I have come across a few books that share the demonic connection between witchcraft and Satan, which is completely inaccurate to most of my community. Not only will studying other views allow you to trust your path and intuition, but it will enlighten your experimental process.
The recommended books below are all written works that I own and have browsed during my search for witchy wisdom. Whether you support more historical ideals or modern practices, the twelve books below will offer true insights. Blessed Be ~
Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner
By Scott Cunningham
“Magic is natural. It is a harmonious movement of energies to create needed change. If you wish to practice magic, all thoughts of it being paranormal or supernatural must be forgotten” (p. 6)
A Wisewoman’s Guide to Spells, Rituals, and Goddess Lore
By Elisabeth Brooke
“To the church, women were the embodiment of matter: earthy and of the world, whilst men were believed to be closer to God and the holders and dispensers of spiritual truths. But within the understanding of most ordinary people the reverse was true.” (p. 51)
The Green Witch
By Arin Murphy-Hiscock
“Why do we use the phrase 'living the path' instead of simply saying 'practicing green witchcraft'? It's very simple. Green witchcraft is not a practice separate from ordinary life, like ritual magic, for example; it is an all-encompassing, total-immersion experience wherein all of life is a magical experience.” (p. 14)
The Modern Witchcraft Book of Tarot
By Skye Alexander
“Tarot cards are also called oracles. When you ask an oracle for advice, some part of you may already know the answer to your question–the oracle enables you to access that knowledge hidden deep within and bring it into the open so you can use it.” (p. 18)
The Essential Guide to Wicca for Beginners
By Amethyst Raine
“Wicca is a way of life; it's who we are and how we live. It's how we grow, develop, and thrive. Wicca empowers the individual to be the best they can be and encourages growth, independence, and responsibility.” (p. 5)
Earth, Air, Fire, & Water
By Scott Cunningham
“Far from being a lofty spiritual pursuit, magic is a means of joining with the earth and of using our powers in common to create a brighter future for both ourselves and our planet.” (p. 5)
The Morrigan: Celtic Goddess of Magick and Might
By Courtney Weber
“She is the spirit of fury and peace, power and destruction, joy and terror. She is warrior, queen, death omen, mother, murderer, lover, spy, conspirator, faery, shape-shifter, healer, and sometimes the living earth itself.” (p. 1)
Wicca Craft: The Modern Witch’s Book of Herbs, Magick, and Dreams
By Gerina Dunwich
“Wiccans respect all other positive religions, and feel that a person must hear the 'call of the goddess' and truly desire within his or her own heart, without any outside influence, to follow the Wiccan path.” (p. 14)
Witchcraft: A Handbook of Magic, Spells, and Potions
By Anastasia Greywolf
“The powerful words inside this tome will allow you to effect great change through potions, spells, charms, magic rituals, and incantations.” (p. 2)
Wiccan Spell a Day
By Sirona Knight
“At the time when you become adept at magic, you will find that every thought, every act, every living being, every object–everything becomes sacred, and life becomes your alter.” (p. xiii)
Hekate: Goddess of Witches
By Courtney Weber
“She appears on earth in sacred spaces, or when three roads met, her head crowned by oak, coils of serpents around her shoulders.” (p. 5)
Living Wicca
By Scott Cunningham
“Some Wiccans decide to tell the world that they're Wiccans (or Witches) purely for shock value, to attract attention, make money, and to gratify their egos. This is the worst reason for revealing your religion to others.” (p. 16)
