The importance of natural and earthly practices in Wicca stems from the open religion's fundamental beliefs and principles. Below are some reasons why implementing the Earth’s elements into one’s life is crucial to one’s Wiccan journey.
Our spaces carry energies, just as the materials, tools, and things we work with and use daily. Cleaning the areas of the spaces we contribute to is an important step in growth. Think about it in terms of dust–every day creates a layer of active particles that cause the space to slowly grow stagnant. Cleansing in both a magickal and literal sense is the best method to build one’s own natural energy, especially if one is always within the same sacred spaces.
Many Wiccans believe that casting a circle provides a sacred space. For those new to the concept of casting circles, this means that we are protecting and sustaining the energies that we desire to have in the places we hold sacred. These places can be any space regarding our attachments and comfortability; in which our homes, bedrooms, kitchens, or favorite corners remain labeled as such.
Energy allocation is very important in the way we interact with the world and ourselves. Thus, our environments contribute to a portion of our subconscious reactions. By learning natural practices, principles, and cleansing methods–one can create a place of support and strength. Wiccans and witches follow their own rules and processes when tasked with cleansing their own sacred spaces; however, below is a list of my personal cleansing procedures to inspire you to create your own. Direction Jars
Placed in the 4 farthest directions of my home (north, south, east, and west) are small jars that represent the four elements (earth, air, fire, and water). This small ritualistic gesture allows me to protect my home from negative energies lingering from visitors, bad attitudes, ill self-talk, stagnancy, and so on.
Redesigning
At least once a month, I like to redesign my home and work spaces to keep the energies lively. I love to decorate with vintage books, plants, and antique decor; however, there are a plethora of ways one can stylize. Think about how the subconscious assists in decisions and behavior–the things one surrounds oneself with aid in spatial aura. Some ideas that I have done may include moving the placement of furniture, removing outgrown decor, adding an activity or object to the space, hiding a journal, or simply letting natural light in can make a change.
Silver
Another space that one must find sacred is within oneself. When I want to reflectively remove my negative self-talk, feelings of stagnancy, or someone’s bad energy has rubbed off on me–I like to wear silver because it’s my silent calling for Hekate to bless me with the awareness to change the boundaries I’ve set within me and to understand the situation from a birds-eye view.
Open the Window
Bad or still energy needs to be released before it can be replaced. I like to open my window as that’s the simplest way to expel energy. Sometimes I will light Sage or Palo Santo wood to complete a full cleansing ritual, but opening the window with the intention to release bad juju is also an option.
